For Deutsche Umwelthilfe and the Environmental Defense Fund, we produced a film showing why reusable packaging can outperform single-use options in daily life for businesses and for cities. At the center is a Berlin pilot project: reusable cups can be returned not only at cafés, but also easily via supermarket bottle-return machines.

A film by Stefan Wieland & Hans Friedrich, in collaboration with Deutsche Umwelthilfe and the Environmental Defense Fund.

The film brings the idea behind “Returning Reusables” to life:

a functioning loop that makes returns simpler and therefore makes reusables more attractive. Especially in a city like Berlin, where huge amounts of single-use takeaway packaging are generated every day, the potential becomes clear.

We also highlight the economic perspective: single-use means ongoing material costs and a constant stream of waste. Reusables can become more efficient through repeated use, deposit systems, and professional take-back, cleaning, and logistics when the infrastructure is in place.
